Time Series: Masquerade is a mixed-media work from the Time Series that reflects on identity, performance, and the weight of history. A row of masked figures stands against a textured, time-worn surface, their anonymity suggesting both protection and quiet endurance. Beneath them, elongated strokes evoke lineage, memory, and the long shadows cast by the past.
A small but deliberate “1619” appears in the upper left, grounding the piece in the origins of Black life in America. The title nods to the emotional tension echoed in Benson’s Masquerade—the idea of moving through the world behind carefully held faces, navigating what is real, what is hidden, and what must be carried forward.
Through layered collage and muted tones, Masquerade invites viewers to consider the masks we wear, the histories that shape them, and the moments when they quietly slip.
