Mothers and Daughters (2022)

Mothers and Daughters, subtitled “Ain’t I a woman.” This painting is inspired by my mother, who raised five daughters who have daughters and granddaughters of their own. It is also inspired by Sojourner Truth, who had 13 children, most of whom were sold into slavery. Hers was a hard life. On June 21, 1851, she gave a unique and exciting speech, “Ain’t I a Woman,” at the Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio. Today, her words are more important than ever. Together, there is much work left to be done.
